Creativity and Well-Being in Akita, Japan

Creativity and inspiration as an intervention to promote mental health and resilience in young adults in Japan. This is a current collaboration with Akita International University (AIU) in Akita, Japan funded by the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility, UMN. All students enrolled in the two-week Creativity and Well-being course were invited to participate in this research study, and eleven elected to participate. The course included workshops in creative writing, visual arts, drama, and wellness (yoga and meditation). In order to examine how the course impacted students, participants took a 54-item Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving survey before and after completion of the course. They also participated in a zoom interview about their experiences. Participants will be invited to take the survey once more 6 months after completion of the course. All students (regardless of whether they participated in the study) will be invited to showcase their artwork in a public art exhibition co-hosted by AIU and The University of Minnesota in collaboration with the Weisman Art Museum.
